Symptoms of skin aging
In aging skin, some changes in the structure and composition of the skin are visible and demonstrable:

-
The epidermis (first layer of skin) is getting thinner.
The number of cell layers decreases. The upper horny layer, on the other hand, can be thickened again. The skin is more vulnerable to external damage. Because the skin barrier is disrupted, the skin becomes drier and valer. -
Two important structures in the second skin layer (dermis) are decreasing in number and quality.
-
The amount of collagen decreases. Collagen is part of the connective tissue and provides firmness to the skin. Hyaluronic acid, a protein that is also part of the connective tissue, also decreases.
-
The amount of elastin decreases, making the skin less stretchy and supple.
Due to a decrease in both collagen and elastin in the skin, the skin becomes weaker, stiffer and wrinkles and folds arise.
In addition to crow's feet and fine lines, there are several causes that make your skin look older. Below you can read which ones they are:
-
Pigment spots. Because the skin is not even in color, the skin looks aged. An even skin, on the other hand, is quickly seen as young skin;
-
Coarse pores. When the skin ages, coarse pores become more visible. The loss of collagen causes volume loss and slackening, causing more stretch on the pores. This causes the pores to shrink and become more visible;
-
Redness (such as couperose) causes an uneven skin color and therefore looks outdated;
-
Dull skin. Dull and matte skin looks older than shiny and radiant skin. Fatigue or an unhealthy lifestyle are often also associated with dull skin.
